According to NACE and US Government reports, corrosion costs the world four to five
percent of GDP - making it more than $3.5 trillion worldwide and as much as $760
billion every year in Europe, $700 billion in the US and $500 billion in China! The
report calculates that around 40% of this loss is preventable but, although better
design and new materials have an increasing role to play in reducing corrosion, what
can be done for vulnerable assets? How can their deterioration be prevented?
